Posted by jan83 in 3D Hybrids.add a comment
I have now finish the 4 etudes for assignment 1. I just have to give in the cover sheet tomorrow –> what a relief. I found myself kinda of forcing the write up towards the end as I just wanted to get it finished before the deadline. Anyway, just got to do assignment 2 for this module. Overall that 3 assignments in total to complete by week 14, all i can say is good luck to me and to others in the same boat.
Week 7 Summary. March 30, 2007

I arrived so late today, I only got to see the last hour of the lesson but basically we looked at some of Jim Bond’s work such as Pin drop (2005) and Scratch #1 (2005). We also looked at the meaning behind the word ‘Transduction’, being that it is one form of kinetic energy into something else and it can be a form of movement into sound.
We were recommended to go to Kinetica Museum today to go and see Ray Lee’s work, but I didn’t get to go.
Ars Electronica was referred to in the lesson and it has a festival in August. It also looks at Hybrid Art which would be worth looking into as this module is based around it. Looking at Wikipedia, Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980), was mentioned looking at the terms Global Village and his book: Medium is the Massage. He is also famous for the saying ‘the medium is the message’. We discussed FORM, MEDIA and CONTENT.
We also watched a DVD called Contraptions of Distinction, Machines by Nik Ramage featuring the works such as: unplugger, fan bags, jelly wobbler, orbit, bak & forth, fingers.
Ian also asked me how I am getting on with my works and I discussed one of my studies ‘images and text’ and he gave me a lot of artists to refer to in my research in my study. He looked into ASCII, he searched for apple movie to ASCII, the ASCII movie player, forevergeek.com, and the artist VUK COSIC (ascii) and Jeffery Shaw (work: the legible city).

3rd Etude – Textures March 22, 2007

For my 3rd etude, I want to look at different textures and look more into the human sense: touch/feel (from etude 1: senses) and see how the skin reacts to different textures. I will have to look at different materials like silk, wool, carpet samples, woods and look at the effects each material have when someone touches it. I will probably have to test some people and possibly blindfold them and see if they know what material they are touching.
Depending on how the experiments go, I will possibly add this feature on to my artefact for assignment two and make the actual artefact have different texture or give it the ability to change its external texture, but it depends how well it goes.
2nd Etudes – Image and Text March 22, 2007

For my second etude, I have decided to look at images and text. The idea of this is inspired by the human sense: sight (from etude 1: sense) and what I plan to do for this is to look at ways in which images can be converted to text, and how text can be made into a visual. To start this, I have try to open a simple image using textpad:
For example, here is a sample image called ‘winter’:
This is how it looks when you open this image with textpad:
I have found another website displaying text used to make an image, check it out: http://www.text-image.com/
As part of my research, I plan on testing some people on some images made using text and make them look at it from close up and then far away and see how long it takes for them to discover a visual and see if they notice what the visual is exactly. I guess I am trying to discover the workings of the brain and how it can interpret things from different distances.
I want to look at this in more detail.

1st Etude – Senses March 12, 2007

For the 1st Etude, I will be researching the different human senses such as touch, smell, taste, sound, etc. The reason i want to investigate this as a 1st Etude is because the senses have a lot to do with interactivity, which is one of the requirements needed for the artefact that will be made for assignment 2. The ways i will be testing this is at ways the people reacts/response to touch which is mainly done with your hands or fingers. Then i will look at ways sounds travels to the ear and how people react to smell and taste.
I found a website associated with this topic to help start my research into it: http://www.hhmi.org/senses/
White Cube in Hoxton Square March 12, 2007

Before the Sam Buxton talk started, myself, Russell and Natalja walked down to the White Cube gallery in Hoxton Square. It was free and we wasn’t allowed to take any pictures of the inside. First we saw this ripped up images of comic strips in frames. Then we went into a dark room with 4 big screens of shootings and it was going round in a repeated sequence to give a 360 effect. I think this piece was called ‘Croosfire’ – the artist (i don’t know). Then we went upstairs into this white coloured room that smelled of paint with some naive paintings that didn’t make any sense. They didn’t have no leaflets to take away with us and we just left the gallery back to see the Sam Buxton’s Talk at Kinetica Museum starting at 6pm. I guess we got to see 2 gallery/museums in one visit.
Here is a snapshot of the outside of White Cube gallery:
Kinetica Museum 07/03/07 – Sam Buxton’s talk March 12, 2007

I attended the Sam Buxton’s talk on Wednesday 7th March 2007. The talk started quite late, because i think they were waiting for the lady that was filming the talk. He basically spoke about moving from different universities because he was originally at Ravensbourne for a year, i think and i think he was unhappy with the course. He spoke about his experience at Royal College of Arts and mentioned that his mum is a painter and his dad was an architect – so he is from an artistic background. He showed us photographs of his works when steel and his works with vauxhall, kenzo, siemens, etc. Overall, quite interesting. I didn’t get any video footage of the actual talk.
I did take some more pictures of the Kinetica Museum Exhibition before the Sam Buxton talk started:
This is a videoclip of Peter Sedgley work that i filmed on 07/03/07:
and another videoclip filmed on 07/03/07 before the talk:
